Coastal erosion is a natural worldwide phenomenon. Quebec is not exception to the rule, especially in the Gaspésie and the Magdalen Islands. Over the last few years, a program to protect embankments from erosion has been initiated by the Quebec Ministry of Transportation (Transports Québec), in order to ensure the monitoring and protection of erosion areas. The organization has thus collected a large volume of data related to the different erosion areas. These data, of different nature (biological, economic, social, etc.) and collected using various means (environmental impact studies, technical reports, research projects, land surveys, hydraulic studies, etc.), are used for the management and the planning of future bank protection projects.
This example, based on Map4Decision, allows for the synthesis, aggregation, and combination of a number of indicators and provides several display types to facilitate risk analyses. For instance, it helps to:
- Highlight potentially unsafe areas according to different risk criteria;
- Rapidly perform risk management at different levels of detail;
- Visualize embankment profiles and photos of stabilization structures using hyperlinks.
